Being a successful entrepreneur is about more than just having the right product or service - it’s also about creating a ‘pattern’ for success that you can follow on a daily, weekly & monthly basis. These habits will define your working day, your goals and, ultimately, how successful you are.
Today, I want to share with you nine success habits for entrepreneurs so you can steal them and use them for yourself!
Understand Your WHY
What is the reason you are in business? If you’re answer is ‘to earn lots of money’, then you may be in the wrong career!
Yes, it totally IS possible to earn lots of money as an entrepreneur, but it’s a damn sight easier to go and work for someone else, get a consistent paycheck, work your 9-5 and forget about your job for the rest of the time!
So if that’s not the reason you started your business, what is?
Here are a few questions you might want to ask yourself:
Why do you love it so much?
Why are you so passionate about it?
What do you believe?
What is your mission?
What change will it provide for others?
What changes do you want from your life?
Get Laser-Focused on Your Goals
Know you understand why you are really in business, you need to know what to aim for.
I love to use both big and small goals for my business. The first thing to do is to brainstorm your dream life.
What do you REALLY want your life to look like? Go as big as you possibly can!
The amazing thing about being an entrepreneur is that you get the opportunity to CREATE your own life - so create the one you dream of!
Next, create goals for 90 days (3 months) and 5 years. Your 5 year goals should be a big enough difference from where you are at right now. Your 90 day goals are 3 goals that bring you much closer to them.
Why such a huge gap?
Because in order to get to your 5 year goals, you have to break it down into smaller chunks, and 90 days is a really manageable timescale to work with. It’s not so long that you can’t see the end of it, but it gives you enough time to action everything.
Lastly, I love to break my 90 day goals into even more manageable (and actionable) tasks.
I list everything I need to do to get to my 90 day goals and break them down into weekly tasks.
Then I schedule in the action steps (ie tasks) that I need to do each day to get there.
Visualise & Believe
Visualisation, meditation and believing in yourself is one of the most important things you can do in your business. And something that you must do DAILY.
If there is one thing I know for sure, every successful entrepreneur has a daily ritual they follow religiously.
For me, I do a 5-minute goal visualisation (this is the one I use, but feel free to find your own!).
This sets me up for the day with my goals being front and centre of my mind and in all the tasks that I complete that day.
It’s also a great way to come up with ideas for how you can achieve those goals! For instance, as soon as I have finished my visualisation, I write down ‘What can I do today to get [insert goal here]’ and brainstorm a quick list of ideas.
The whole visualisation and brainstorming process takes just 10 minutes!
Yep, planning your tasks each day is imperative in order to achieve your goals and become successful as an entrepreneur!
Whether you decide to go all in and block out time for each task, or simply have a checklist of tasks you need to do each day, is up to you!
I’m currently trying out Trello (a FREE planning and scheduling system), but in the past, simply a daily list of items to do has worked well for me too.
Work on your mindset every day. It’s taken your entire life to have the mindset you currently have - so it’s going to take a long time to change it too!
I know some people who swear by journaling, EFT or meditating, but simply just ‘being’ in the moment can be equally as effective.
Do you ever feel stuck, overwhelmed, closed in our just plain uncomfortable for no apparent reason?
When I feel like this, I need space. It’s actually one of the reasons I moved from Surrey to Shropshire!
I’m not suggesting you up and relocate your entire family (although it was the best decision I ever made!) but go outside in nature and just take some quiet time for yourself.
Personally, I love to be in a field, where all I can see are fields and green space. If I can, I’ll take my shoes and socks off and walk through the grass or simply sit and connect with the earth around me.
If that sounds too ‘woo’ for you, I beg you to give it a go!
If you still can’t get used to the idea, take some time to go for a walk somewhere peaceful, swim, run, or do something that allows you time to just be you again and center yourself.
Don’t Try to Do It All Yourself
One of the biggest mistakes that new entrepreneurs make, and I see this time and time again, is that they try to do EVERYTHING by themselves.
Here’s the cold, hard truth: You Can’t.
It’s simply not sustainable. You’ll miss things. You’ll get overwhelmed and stressed. Emails will go out with typos in them, sales pages or products will have broken links and you’ll sit there wondering why no-one is buying from you.
Focus on what you’re great at, and give the rest to someone else!
Ask for help, ask for advice, and be proud that you have the ‘growth mindset’ of a successful entrepreneur!
Having a V.A. or someone to do your taxes for you frees up some of your time to focus on growing your client base and making more sales. And if you need help to do those things, speak to a business coach and let them guide you.
Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You
Doing the same thing every day will only get you so far in your business. At some point (and usually much sooner than you think!) you’re going to need to try something new. Sometimes, that ‘something new’ is pretty darn scary!
But in order to grow - as a successful entrepreneur and as a business - you must do one thing every day that scares you!
That could mean making a phone call, reaching out to an influencer, speaking to your coach, asking for advice, going Live on Facebook or a million other things!
Here’s a great saying to keep in mind:
Self-Development is Key
One of my highest values is self-development, and it’s one that all successful entrepreneurs share.
Know that you’ll never be ‘done’ with learning, and that’s ok! In fact, that’s just how it should be.
The world around us changes, and we must keep up in order to succeed.
Take a course, read a blog post or an eBook, listen to a podcast or watch an informational YouTube video.
Soak up all that beautiful information and develop your mind to be the best it can be. Then apply that knowledge to your business.
Value yourself, your skills, your time, your business - and others will too. Your value doesn’t decrease because of someone else’s inability to see it.
It’s time to really understand the difference between value and price.
I LOVE this quote “Price is what you pay, value is what you get”.
Remember that! (TIP: save this image and have it as your phone & computer screensaver!)
This principle applies to everything in your business - what you sell AND what you invest in yourself. As long as the value you receive is in equal balance (or greater) than the price you pay, you’re in for the win!
